After trying various troubleshooting methods, including those you shared in this article, I eventually decided to restore the factory settings on my external display, and I think there had been funky resolution settings before I restored them. That resolved the problem for me. You might have your readers give that a shot if they have the “freezing” issues when connected to an external display.
