What worked for me was:
– Reset Apple Watch (I have a Series 2). Make sure it’s fully charged
– Connect to 2.4 GHZ wi-fi
– DO NOT connect the watch to a charger
– Once phone starts downloading the update, turn off Bluetooth on your iphone
– This will improve the speed of installation
– Wait until software is installed in Watch. Easily more than 1.5 hours
– Watch app may show weird messages that an update is available. Ignore…
– Watch may show the spirograph…. click the crown
– Watch will finish the update and restore from backup process…

Ive now tried at my home and at work and get the same messages. Once it said the update was available and it updated partially and then stopped and again disconnected the pairing with my phone. My phone is updated to the iOs 13 and I have Series 3 watch. They are both connected to a medical device I wear so this is very uncool!!! Help!!!

Hi Madison,

If you use a passcode on your watch, turn this off and re-engage after your watch updates.

Put both the iPhone and the watch on the charger and close all apps. Then try updating the watch again

I have restarted my iPhone and my watch, reset my networking setting, turned off my Bluetooth, I’ve tried doing the update from my phone and my watch.
I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Series 5 Apple Watch. I’m not sure what else to do. Please help, thank you!

It will not work. To solve the problem, you must *mail* your Apple Watch to the appropriate engineering team at Apple, who will remove the 5.3.4 build.

After trying everything in the above article — as well as searching elsewhere for solutions and failing to find any — I set up a chat w/Apple support. They told me the above in no uncertain terms. They explained that watchOS 5.3.4 was a “special” build for series 1 & 2 Apple Watches paired with iPhones running iOS 12 and older, and that 5.3.4 now needs to be removed by (also special) Apple technicians. The techs at the Apple Store definitely can’t do it; if you bring your watch with this build to them, they’ll just ship it to the home office themselves.

If you have this particular problem, and you don’t want to bring your watch to an Apple Store for shipping, you can do what I did: go to support.apple.com/contact and click through “see more products,” “Apple Watch,” “setup and usage,” “updating my Apple Watch OS,” and get in touch w/ an Apple support rep. Once you explain what’s up, they’ll send you a mail-in kit for your watch.

Before anyone at Apple will let you proceed with handing over your watch, you’ll need to turn off “Activation Lock” — easily accomplished by unpairing your watch from your iPhone (which should automatically backup the watch to the phone and erase the watch). These and all other instructions for preparing your watch for service at support.apple.com/HT207826 and more about Activation Lock at support.apple.com/HT205009 .
