She never set up an iCloud ID and now her iPad is saying she has one and is demanding the password over and over again.
1. We have tried to use her Apple ID password and that hasn’t worked.
2. We updated her Apple ID and that didn’t work.
3. We have no access to anything through iCloud.com, so trying to reset the password hasn’t worked because the email is sent to an account we don’t have access to.
4. We tried to sign out of iCloud, but it needs a password.
She has just updated the OS and now it’s worse.
Please help.

Liz,

First of all, thank you sooo much for all your help, I’m sure people on here do not tell you enough so seriously, Thank you!

I searched around for a terminal solution online as well before contacting you and I found mostly a lot of misinformation.

But with one simple command, the issue is fixed, and now I have one more solution to file away in case I need to help someone else down the road.

Much appreciated!

Hi Henry,

Oh darn, I thought that would work since it removes associated Apple IDs from the system. Saving a copy of your iCloud data should not cause this problem–but who knows, sometimes anything is possible. Usually, you’ll find a folder called iCloud archive. If you see this folder, instead of deleting it, try changing its name or moving it to another drive or location.

But before you do that, let’s try using Terminal

Open the Terminal and type in the following command: defaults delete MobileMeAccounts

When you use this Terminal command, it forces macOS to sign you out of iCloud–so this should work for you.

After you execute this command, go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts and see if you can sign in to your iCloud account

Hopefully, you no longer see that error message. If not, see if your Mac shows your Apple ID now–if not, sign in and choose all the services you want to sync with your Apple ID.

Now, if nothing helps, it’s time to get Apple Support involved!

At this point, I highly advise you to contact Apple regarding the Apple ID issue–these support calls are free since they deal with Apple ID issues (or at least they are supposed to be free.)

If you go this route (which I recommend) you will likely need to go through a few lines of support from first-line help to senior techs.

Please keep us posted on your journey. If we (or you and Apple Support) are able to figure this out, we’d love to know what works so we can pay it forward for others in the same boat!

Cheers and good luck,

Liz

I thought maybe a “Reset my default Keychains” might help as well but that didn’t do anything either.

As far as forcing my Mac to recreate the APSD push notification file: I used the links you gave in the article and I followed all the troubleshooting solutions listed in the article (which was very well written by the way). I deleted everything that was suggested completed all the steps like it suggested, even with all the system reboots. I even deleted all of them together at the end to see if that would work (everything related to my account or IDS in the keychain and the APSD.plist file). I also made sure that the Mac was removed from my account as well, but no change.

I still get the same exact messages when I try to login to my account or add the account, it says the account already is logged in.

Is there any other advice you can give me?
I was wondering, when you delete the iCloud account it asks if you would like to save a copy of the data, when I originally tried to delete the account I don’t remember what I chose. Could that have an effect? Could I remove that file, do you think that would make a difference?

Hi Henry,

So sorry to hear about all these problems with your Mac and macOS Catalina! What a huge pain in the you know what.

We suspect it might be a problem with either your Keychain or Apple’s push notification file for your Apple ID.

We suggest reviewing your Keychain and look for items with your Apple ID and possibly force your Mac to recreate that APSD push notification file.

Take a look at these steps for assistance with keychain and apsd issues.

I hope this helps. Either way, let us know

Liz

I had an issue with my iCloud all the sudden telling me I’m not signed in and if I want to use the iCloud I need to sign in.

I went to System Preferences > Apple ID & entered my ID and password but then I get a warning saying that the account is already logged in so I need to delete the account in my “Internet Accounts” menu.

So I went in and deleted the iCloud account like it suggested (there are no accounts listed now, a completely blank list).

But when I try to re-add the account it says the account already exists even though it does not show up in the internet accounts list.

I went through any program that uses my Apple ID and signed out as well just in case ( contacts, calendar, iTunes, Facetime, etc.).

Still, I am not able to sign back into my account in the “Apple ID” menu or re-add the iCloud account in the “Internet Accounts” menu.

So I log online to my Apple Account and click on the icon for my MacBook Pro and “Remove from the account”.

The MacBook Pro is successfully removed from my account.

Then I try again to log in and/or add the iCloud account but still no change.

So just to be sure I reboot, still nothing.

The few things I can find in the Apple forums that pertain to this issue seem to suggest that the only course of action for this would be to completely re-load the OS but that seems like overkill for something that should have a simple solution.

Like removing the files or cache that is keeping the OS believing that the account is signed in? Can you please help, I’m at a loss where to go next?

I even tried signing in with a new Apple ID, just creating a new one with a new email but even that gives me a “something went wrong” error when the account is being created.

I also tried even using someone else’s account to login and then maybe log out and re-login with mine if that worked…. but of course, it wouldn’t let me sign in with someone else’s Apple ID either.

Possible Root Cause:
If it helps, this started a week after I changed my Apple ID from a @gmail.com account to an actual @icloud.com account. Everything seemed to transition just fine after the change, I signed in with the new account no problem and then after a week all the sudden this issue pops up out of nowhere. My iPhone is using the same iCloud account and it has no problem though.

Hi Zenil,

Try downloading and installing a free app from the App Store on your iPhone 11 Pro Max using that new Apple ID–that should help get your account established so you can upgrade your iCloud Storage plan.
